Can Hypnosis Really Help Me Quit Smoking?
Can hypnosis really help you quit smoking? The answer is yes it can! However, there are many steps that need to be included in the process. For some it may just be listening to a stop smoking hypnosis CD or attending a group smoking cessation seminar. But often times for most, these tools won't be the end all or be all solution to helping you stop smoking.
Regardless of knowing the health benefits of being smoke free, some seemingly, undermining driving forces still persist, compelling you to smoke. Please stop blaming yourself. Understand that your subconscious mind is really running the show.
One of the keys to successfully stopping smoking, is to understand the power of your subconscious mind. It is highly probable that this smoking behavior got programmed as a response to a set of circumstances. So believe it or not, smoking has become a coping mechanism of your subconscious mind. Societal and tribal teachings deliver messages such as "Quitting smoking is just a matter of willpower.", or "If you want to quit smoking badly enough, you will just stop." However, there is quite a bit scientific fact disregarded in these statements. This science provides insights into how your mind is operating. Trying to stop smoking without enlisting the power of the subconscious mind to help you is essentially like trying to swim across the Gulf of Mexico.
Truthfully, willpower is no match for your subconscious mind.
Willpower is a product of the conscious mind. You may have heard that we only use about 10% of our brains. That statement is actually only partially true. It is your conscious mind that runs that 10% of your life. Its the area of the brain that science refers to as the neocortex or the frontal lobe. It is the area of the brain that organizes and is logical. This is the area of the brain that has the "brains" to acknowledge and tell you "hey maybe we ought to stop this behavior, it's hurting and destructive." So every bit of "intention" is put forth to change this habit.
Now let's look at the subconscious mind. This part of the brain is referred to as the limbic brain. The limbic brain, or the subconscious mind, runs the other 90% of the show. It handles all the behind the scenes activities, like all of your bodily functions. For the most part, you do not have to pay attention to making your heart beat, your eyes blink, your cells divide or your lungs to breathe. These functions happen "automatically". The subconscious mind learned how to do these functions and they became part of a subconscious activity.
Next understand that the subconscious mind is considered to be your "emotional mind". The laws of the mind state "the strongest emotion will always win." Behaviors are actually learned and they are part of the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is where you store your memories. Often times, behaviors can be maladaptive, in that they were acquired as a learned response to external circumstances. The subconscious mind created a "feeling" that smoking made you feel better. If the strongest emotion will always win, and you haven't learned new ways to feel better, or you haven't reprogrammed your subconscious mind to feel differently about smoking, than using just your conscious mind to fight your subconscious beliefs to quit smoking is like asking a kitten to fight a lion and win.
